Pinus thunbergii, large informal upright
This is the biggest and most valuable tree in our collection: a Japanese Black Pine (kuromatsu) with a heavy, deeply plated corkscrew trunk and a small natural jin at its base. Branches are wired into broad, layered pads of short dark needles, and moss has settled over the surface roots.
A headline specimen
Everything about this tree reads at a larger scale than usual: the trunk's plating, the spread of the pads, the presence it holds from across a room. It is a centrepiece tree, suited to a collector or a serious display space rather than a first bonsai.
Imported from Japan
This pine was imported directly from Japan, with its plant passport on file. Two smaller Japanese pines are also in our current collection: a young Pinus thunbergii at 33 x 37 cm and a Pinus pentaphylla white pine at 65 x 70 cm, together giving a range of pine character and scale.
