Pinus thunbergii
Japanese Black Pine (kuromatsu) is the classic pine of Japanese bonsai, known for rough, plated bark and stiff dark needles. The trunk has the thick, corkscrew twist and deep plating that the species is grown for.
The first branch is wired and sweeps to the right, balancing the movement of the trunk, and the short dark needles sit in tidy pads.
Why this specimen
A trunk with this much twist at this size is uncommon in a black pine of this size. The plating is already deep, and the compact needles mean the tree keeps its proportions in a small pot.
