Pinus pentaphylla, 29 years

Known in Japan as goyomatsu, Pinus pentaphylla is the classic five-needle white pine of Japanese bonsai, prized above almost any other conifer for the quiet, silvery character of its foliage. At 29 years old, this tree has developed a broad informal-upright form, a thick, flaking trunk, and moss growing naturally at the base.

The branches have been trained into layered, horizontal pads of fine blue-green needles, spreading a full 70 cm wide against a modest 65 cm height. It is the widest, most established tree we have brought in from this shipment.

A trunk with real age

Flaking, textured bark is one of the clearest signs of an old pine, and this trunk has it in abundance, built up over three decades of growth and careful training. Moss has settled naturally at the base, adding to the sense of a tree that has been cared for over a long stretch of time rather than styled quickly.

Imported from Japan

This white pine was imported directly from Japan, with its plant passport on file, arriving in the same shipment as several other trees now in our collection. Pinus pentaphylla is considered one of the most refined species in Japanese bonsai, valued for foliage that stays fine and controlled even on a specimen of this size.
