No new growth
A healthy bonsai pushes new shoots in spring and summer. Stalled growth points to light, feeding, or simple dormancy.
Likely causes
Dormancy (often normal)
How to tell: It's autumn or winter and the tree is deciduous or temperate.
The fix: Do nothing — this is natural rest. Growth resumes on its own in spring.
Too little light
How to tell: An indoor tree far from light, with weak, pale shoots.
The fix: Move it to the brightest spot available, and consider a grow light through winter.
Hungry or root-bound
How to tell: No feeding for months, or roots circling a tight pot.
The fix: Feed through the growing season, and repot in spring if the roots have filled the pot.
How to prevent it
Bright light, seasonal feeding, and repotting every one to three years.
Common questions
Should I fertilise to force growth?
Feed during the growing season, but never a dormant or stressed tree — that does more harm than good.
