Bonsai dropping its leaves
Sudden leaf drop is usually shock — a change the tree didn't like. The job is finding what changed.
Likely causes
A recent move or change
How to tell: It started right after you bought, repotted, or moved the tree. Ficus especially sulk after a change.
The fix: Keep everything stable, resist moving it again, and be patient — new leaves usually follow within weeks.
Watering stress
How to tell: Soil is either constantly soggy or completely dry.
The fix: Water only when the top of the soil is just-dry, and make sure the pot actually drains.
Light shock
How to tell: The tree went from bright to dim — often a summer-to-indoors move.
The fix: Give steady, bright light and avoid sudden swings in conditions.
How to prevent it
Change one thing at a time and give the tree a few weeks to adjust before doing anything else.
Common questions
My ficus dropped all its leaves — is it dead?
Often not. Scratch the bark: green underneath means it's alive. Keep it warm, bright and lightly watered, and it should reshoot.
How long until the leaves come back?
Usually a few weeks in the growing season, once the cause is fixed.
