Olive forest on slab

This is a small grove of olive trees planted together on a single rock slab, the style bonsai growers call a forest or group planting. Several trunks of different heights rise from shared ground, giving the impression of a miniature grove rather than one isolated tree.

Olive brings its own character to a forest planting: pale, twisting trunks, small silver-grey leaves, and a Mediterranean feel that few other species can match. Grown together on the slab, the trees read as a single scene rather than a collection of individual specimens.

Why a forest planting

A group of trees on a slab creates depth and perspective that a single trunk can't. Trees of different heights and thicknesses stand in for a natural stand of olives on a hillside, and the gaps between trunks become part of the composition.

About this piece

This tree is a one-of-a-kind piece. The main photo presents it staged in our tokonoma display style, an alcove setting we use for collection-tier pieces. The gallery below has the original, unedited photos taken during preparation, so you can see the trunks, foliage and slab exactly as they are.
