Ishizuki Kishu juniper bonsai, a tree-on-rock composition

This Kishu juniper is grown in the ishizuki, or root-on-rock, style: the tree grips the rock with its roots and cascades down one side, so the whole piece reads like a windswept conifer clinging to a cliff face.

Kishu is one of the finest forms of Shimpaku juniper, valued for its soft, dense, deep-green scale foliage. Set against the raw texture of the rock, that fine foliage creates a clear contrast between the living tree and the bare stone.

Heritage of the ishizuki style

Ishizuki is among the most striking bonsai styles, born from the Japanese fascination with mountain and coastal scenery where trees survive in exposed, difficult places. The whole composition turns on the relationship between tree and stone, a single image of a tree holding on.

About this piece

This is a one-of-a-kind composition, sold as the tree and rock shown in the photographs. Every ishizuki piece is unique in how the roots have taken hold of the stone, so what you see in the gallery is exactly what you would receive.
