Japanese White Pine bonsai, Pinus pentaphylla

This Japanese White Pine (Pinus pentaphylla) is a compact tree with a lot of movement. One long branch sweeps out horizontally and then down, well past the edge of the pot, which gives it the feel of a semi-cascade. It grows from a raised, mossy root mass with a thick, corky trunk base. It is a better tree than its size suggests, and the movement is the whole point.

The pot

The pot is a faceted hexagonal ceramic in dark brown, unglazed, 12 cm high. Its plain shape stays quiet next to the sweeping branch.
