Wild Olive bonsai, Olea europaea sylvestris

This is the wild olive, Olea europaea sylvestris, not the garden olive. The wild form is the ancestor of the cultivated tree, usually with smaller leaves and a tougher, denser habit, and it is the rarer and more collectable of the two. This one is a small tree with a strongly S-curved trunk and good surface roots, styled in tiers. It comes in the ceramic pot shown.

The pot

The pot is a purple-brown unglazed ceramic, 18.5 x 14 x H6 cm, with a flat projecting rim, a stepped base band and cut feet. The muted clay suits the silver-green leaves.
