Chinese Juniper bonsai, semi-cascade

This Chinese Juniper (Juniperus chinensis) is styled as a semi-cascade. The trunk leans out and the main branch sweeps down over the rim of the pot, which gives a small tree the look of an old juniper shaped by wind on a cliff edge. It comes in the ceramic pot shown.

The pot

The pot is unglazed ceramic in a dark aubergine brown, deep and square, 13.5 x 13.5 x H9 cm. The plain shape keeps the eye on the trunk and the falling foliage.

About Juniperus chinensis

Chinese Juniper is one of the classic bonsai conifers in Japan and China. It takes pruning and wiring well, and its dense scale-like foliage forms the compact green pads that make a juniper easy to recognise.
