Juniperus chinensis Itoigawa
This Itoigawa juniper (Juniperus chinensis 'Itoigawa') has built the trunk and branch structure seen here, trained in the informal upright style with wired branches shaped into layered foliage pads. The trunk carries natural shari and flaking bark, the marks of age that collectors look for in a juniper of this cultivar.
A trunk with real character
Years of training have given this tree a muscular, weathered trunk with real presence. The natural shari (stripped deadwood) and flaking bark are part of its history rather than artificial ageing, and the layered pads above show careful, patient training.
Imported from Japan
This juniper was imported directly from Japan, with its plant passport on file, and arrived as part of the same shipment that brought the double-trunk Itoigawa also in our collection. The cultivar is prized in Japanese bonsai for foliage that stays fine and tight even as the trunk matures into something rugged and characterful.
About this specimen
The photos show the exact tree you will receive, presented in a glazed celadon pot. Two more Itoigawa junipers of the same origin are still being photographed and will join the shop separately once ready, but this listing is for the single tree pictured here, pot included.
