Juniper Itoigawa bonsai

This Juniper Itoigawa bonsai (Juniperus chinensis 'Itoigawa') has a thick trunk with plenty of movement and fine foliage gathered into soft green pads. Itoigawa is the shimpaku most collectors look for first. The scale-like foliage stays small and even, so the tree looks refined at any size. It comes in the ceramic pot shown.

The pot

The pot is unglazed terracotta-red ceramic, 34 x 23.5 x H10.5 cm. It has a banded rim, recessed side panels and scroll feet. The warm red clay sets off the green of the foliage.

Heritage and appeal

The juniper is one of the most respected subjects in Japanese bonsai. Living wood and weathered deadwood together stand for endurance and survival. The Itoigawa cultivar, named after its home region, is prized for foliage that stays fine even on a large tree.
