Liquidambar bonsai

This Liquidambar (sweetgum) has a thick, swollen base with pale, textured bark, and a slimmer trunk that rises from it and opens into a spray of branches. The leaves are the classic star shape, glossy and finely toothed. Liquidambar is deciduous, and its leaves turn red, orange and purple in autumn. It is already planted in the ceramic pot shown.

The pot

The pot is a dark charcoal glazed ceramic, rectangular, 25.5 x 19.5 x H8 cm. Its low, plain shape suits the heavy base and leaves the tree as the focus.
