Azalea bonsai
This is an azalea, grown as a flowering bonsai with a weathered, driftwood-like trunk that gives it presence even without bloom. Azalea is one of the most popular flowering species for bonsai, prized for the way a mature trunk can look wind-worn and ancient while the branches still carry soft, glossy foliage.
In season, azalea bonsai flower in dense clusters that can cover the whole canopy for a few weeks, then settle back into quiet green for the rest of the year. This piece is currently out of bloom in the photos, so what you see is the tree's structure: trunk, branching and foliage.
Why azalea
Few species change character as dramatically through the year as azalea. The bare structure this tree shows now is the same one that carries the flowers, so what you're really buying is the framework, a trunk with age and movement, ready to bloom again on its own calendar.
About this piece
This tree is a one-of-a-kind piece. The main photos present it staged in our tokonoma display style, an alcove setting we use for collection-tier pieces, front and back. The gallery below has the original, unedited photos of the actual tree out of season, so you can see the trunk, branching and foliage exactly as they are.
