Step 4 of 4

Your first pruning

Pruning is how you shape a bonsai — and it's far less scary than it looks. Start small.

Why we prune

Removing a shoot here redirects the tree's energy and keeps it small and refined. You're not harming your tree — you're sculpting it, one deliberate cut at a time.

Two simple, safe cuts

Pinch or trim new shoots back to a couple of leaves to keep the silhouette tight, and remove any branch growing straight up or straight down. That alone is plenty for your first session.

When (and when not) to cut

Light trimming is fine throughout the growing season. Save heavy, structural cuts for the right season for your species — and never prune a stressed or freshly repotted tree.

Key takeaways

  • Pruning shapes the tree and keeps it small — it doesn't harm it.
  • Trim new shoots back; remove straight up/down branches.
  • Light cuts anytime in growth; heavy cuts by season only.
