Bare branches in winter. A tree that hasn\u2019t moved in weeks. No new buds, no new leaves, nothing. At some point, almost every bonsai owner ends up staring at their tree wondering the same thing: is it dead, or just sleeping?<\/p>\n
I\u2019ve been there more times than I\u2019d like to admit. The first time I thought I\u2019d lost a Japanese maple, I nearly threw it out. Turns out it was perfectly dormant, just doing what maples do in January. That tree is still with me today, twenty-something years later.<\/p>\n
The good news is that telling dead from dormant is usually straightforward if you know what to look for. A few specific checks done in the right order will give you a clear answer in most cases.<\/p>\n
Dormancy isn\u2019t the same as neglect. It\u2019s an active biological process where the tree slows everything down to conserve energy through cold or dry seasons.<\/p>\n
During dormancy, outdoor deciduous species like maples, elms, and hornbeams lose their leaves entirely. That\u2019s normal. The branches look bare, the tree looks dead, but inside the vascular system is ticking along at low speed. Evergreens like junipers and pines don\u2019t lose their needles, but they grow very slowly or not at all.<\/p>\n
The timing matters. If a deciduous bonsai is bare in December, that\u2019s expected. If it\u2019s bare in June and hasn\u2019t pushed a single bud in two months, that\u2019s a different story.<\/p>\n
A few things should make you pay closer attention.<\/p>\n
Branches that snap cleanly and dryly \u2014 no flex, no slight resistance \u2014 are usually dead. Living wood bends a little before it breaks, even in winter.<\/p>\n
Bark that looks shriveled, sunken, or is peeling away from the wood in large sections is a warning sign. Some peeling is normal for certain species, but widespread bark lifting often means the tissue beneath has died.<\/p>\n
A smell of rot from the soil or the base of the trunk is serious. Root rot can kill a tree from the bottom up, and by the time it shows above ground, the damage is often already extensive.<\/p>\n
Work through these checks in order. Each one takes about thirty seconds.<\/p>\n
The scratch test.<\/strong> This is the most reliable single test you can do. Pick a thin branch and scrape the bark lightly with your fingernail or a small blade. What\u2019s underneath matters: living cambium is green or whitish and slightly moist. Dead cambium is brown and dry. Test three or four branches in different parts of the tree. If even one shows green, the tree is alive.<\/p>\n The bud check.<\/strong> Look closely at the tips of the branches for bud development. On deciduous species, dormant buds are small, tight, and firm \u2014 you can see them if you look carefully. No buds at all on a deciduous tree in late winter or early spring is a bad sign.<\/p>\n The root check.<\/strong> Gently press the surface of the substrate. Does it smell musty or sour? Does the tree wobble in the pot when you give it a slight tug? If the root system has failed, the tree won\u2019t be anchored properly.<\/p>\n The flexibility test.<\/strong> Take the thinnest branches you can find and bend them slightly. They should flex rather than snap. Dead twigs are brittle and break with no resistance.<\/p>\n
